Treatment of rib pain with osteopathy Bern
Rib pain
Rib pain can range from pain in the middle of the back to pain in the front of the chest, sometimes radiating from the back to the front. It is usually aggravated (and sometimes caused) by deep breathing, coughing, sneezing or laughing, and often manifests as a sharp pain.
Did you know that about 30% of people who have trauma to the chest break at least one rib?
Why do ribs hurt?
The ribs are very strong bones in our body and normally do not break unless there is a strong impact or there is an underlying disease that causes the bones to become more brittle. Very often rib pain occurs after being sick for a while, for example due to coughing, which can strain the small muscles between the ribs.
But problems with the lungs can also cause rib pain. If you have sudden chest pain or breathing difficulties that worsen especially with physical exertion, please see a doctor!
Common causes of rib pain
- Strained muscle or ligament, e.g. due to coughing
- Herniated discs in the thorax (rather rare)
- Basic pathologies such as inflammatory joint diseases
- Injuries to the ribs or rib cage from falls, road traffic collisions, and athletic contact
- Shingles
- Basic diseases of organs such as the lungs
